As children of God we need to realize there is an enemy in our lives. One who isn’t going to sit idly by while we grow in love, patience and joy, and God prospers us. Satan is called our enemy for a reason and he will always try to put a stop to God’s work in us. This shouldn’t scare us, because we are more than able to stop him.
James 4:7 tells us “Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” That word “flee” means that Satan will run from us in stark terror. How do we resist him though? How do we make him so afraid of us that he flees in fear?
God has given us His word, prayer, and the prayers of others as means of resistance. Another way we stop the devil is our praise. That’s why it’s one of the first things he tries to steal from us.
He knows that it will stop him in his tracks. It says in Psalm 8:2 “Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants, You have ordained strength, Because of Your enemies, That You may silence the enemy and the avenger.” Jesus quotes this verse in Matthew 21:16 “Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies You have prepared praise for Yourself.” He replaces the word “strength” with “praise” showing us that when we open our mouths to praise God, the devil shuts his mouth in fear.
Praise strengthens us to see Jesus as the victor and Satan as His defeated foe. Praise goes into the spiritual realm and silences the voice of the enemy in our lives and makes his attacks powerless.
The amazing thing about praise is that it fulfills James 4:7 with one action, because when we praise God we are submitting to him while making the devil run from us. That is why it’s so powerful, and that is why we have to praise when the storms of life come against us.
When we exalt and magnify God He raises us up over any circumstance, trial or temptation. The next time there is an attack of the enemy in our lives, let’s remember that when we open our mouth in praise to God, the devil has to shut his.
